Curry leaf cuttings

Has anyone grown curry leaf plants from a cutting? I got a great couple of branches from an India supermarket the other day and one was so chunky I thought it would be a shame to just pluck and chuck when I could grow instead.

Basically I've just cut the bottom off and stuck it in a pot of water on the windowsill. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could coax my curry clippings back to life? Any ideas gratefully received...

Hi,

I did mine by pulling off 2 or 3" long semi-ripe side-shoots with a heel, potting them in a half sharp sand/ half seed compost mix and putting them in the cold frame with half a pop bottle over them.

The more usual time to take cuttings is in mid to late summer, in which case you wouldn't normally use hormone rooting powder. At this time of year though, using a rooting powder might increase your chances of success.

Just make sure the foliage doesn't get wet or they go furry........dipping the cuttings in fungicide solution and allowing them to dry off before putting them in the cold frame helps prevent fuzzies too, but then the rooting hormone might not work because some fungicides can interfere with them.....

Cloning gel works really well too on most out of season cuttings, I love the stuff but it's a bit expensive.

I grew mine in the same way, except in the green house. Plonked them in a cup of water and let the roots grow. Then planted them out into small pots. At this time of the year the kitchen is pobably a better place to keep them
