  • Yet more bay tree advice needed

I have had a bay tree for about 10 years now - it is about 1.5m high. It was in a pot for a long time and then I planted it in the ground about 4 years ago. The problem is that it has 2 main trunks and I would like to split it into two plants and try to train them to a lollipop shape. Does anyone have any experience of splitting a bay, do you think it is likely to work or am I better off just cutting off one half so that i definitely end up with one tree instead of maybe having 2?

That sounds like quite major surgery ... I wouldn't do it, myself.

I have to agree with Two Sheds, unless they're growing further apart it's very likely they're sharing the same root system and the split would kill them both. Bays often sucker so if there are smaller stems coming from the ground you may be able to (carefully!) prise one of these out. Otherwise try taking cuttings.
      And welcome to the vine!
