Following on from another thread, I came across this while googling
The Joys of Catnip
It would seem to be rather useful. I was quite impressed by it's aphid and mouse repelling qualities (not to mention mosquitoes and deer)

My only concern is that it will attract cats. I am not a catlover (really I am not even a catliker, possibly a cattolerator at best) We have no near neighbours but there are a few cats in the village. How far away will they get the scent?? I really don't want to wake up and find a load of spaced out moggies in the garden!

The only way you can grow this then is in a hanging basket, if you water it well it grows fine.

Another bad side effect of growing cat nip is cats will also spray all around your garden in order to gain territory over your plants.

I grow cat nip in pots for my cats and dry the leaves. Its very potent.!

i saw some in wilkies today, i was trying to think of a suitable place to grow some for my puddy tats ..... maybe in a pot if all the local cats will be round ...... asbo would get hysterical it the garden gets taken over by strange felines lol

If your growing it for your own Puddy Tat's then i strongly recomend you get a mesh hanging basket and secure it upside down over your plant, in container or ground planted, let the cats destroy, (and they will), the foliage that grows through the mesh thus protecting the plants crown, this will ensure a constant supply of foliage.

If you dont, well... you've been warned..!!

Umm...just been out to look for my catnip and cat mint- and I can't find eitherlooks like the cat got there first??? ( or is it a bit soon for it to be growing??)

When we had a cat I had to put an upside down hanging basket cage over the top so that the shoots weren't eaten as they came through. Since I got some plants of Six Hill Giant I don't really have a problem, all the local cats call for a munch, but I don't have any bother with them to be honest.

I used to have some catmint growing in the garden and in pots. My cat rolled all over the one in the garden (looked hysterical rubbing his neck against it - a feline version of spraying perfume on the neck?), but he absolutely ignored the ones in the pots.
