How do you manage to have both herbs looking so good?I never had success with any of them and the soil here seems to be prfect(sandy and stones)

I'm guessing that was aimed at me, since I posted the photos?

If so, climate may be the reason. I'm down in sunny Cambridge, and my front garden is at the end of a small cul-de-sac next to a six-foot-high wall, hence very sheltered and quite warm despite being north-facing. The soil is fairly rich but shallow - we're on top of one of the low chalky hills that cover south Cambridgeshire, on what was farm land thirty years ago - and when I was extending the bed at the weekend, I found long horizontal roots just below the surface which I think are from the rosemary. It's also quite damp - the lawn is mostly moss at the end nearest the house! - which again is not typical Mediterranean conditions, but the rosemary doesn't seem to mind.

Certainly there's no secret to my success - I just bunged them in the ground and left them to it!

Yes! Get rid of the black as it could kill off your whole plant
