  • New To Herbs Questions

    Morning Folks,

I want to grow the following herbs for the first time and have a couple questions:-

    Basil
    Coriander
    Parsley
    Horseradish

    • Apart from the Horseradish do/can I germinate in a electric prop
    • When put in their final position would you for instance have 3 – 4 germinated seeds per pot
    Cheers

not quite answering the question but I have basil, coriander and parsley on the windowsill planted 3 weeks ago. No electricity needed! Basil is slow to germinate but is on its way now. If you keep a few seedlings in a pot you'll get a quicker harvest as more to cope with being picked.

Basil can be done in a propagator in a seed tray and then pricked out into individual pots.

Coriander needs to be sown directly as it will bolt and flower if transplanted. It likes some shade too.

Parsley can be difficult to germinate, I soak my seeds in water overnight then scatter them on seed compost in a tray. I prick out the seedlings into individual pots or modules and then once they are established plant outside.

For horseradish, I advise buying the root or getting some spare root from a friend.

I buy a growing plant of basil from the supermarket, split and plant it in fresh compost into three pots.
Coriander, not sure, I'll have to check the seed packet and I'm working away from home this week
Parsley, I grow the flat leafed stuff, it's meant to be a better flavour

Hi Capsid, sorry was asking Broadway. Supermarket variety is 'Sweet Genovese', can split plant or take cuttings (rooted in water) I grow a few different types of Basil if you fancy trying a few different ones (pm me) I grow Cilantro for leaf Corainder and prefer the flat leaf parsley also.

Tip for getting your parsley to germinate quickly.
Parsley can be very slow to germinate as you may or may not know, so if you are the impatient sort (and at this time of year, who ain't ?) so after you have sown it, water it with water from a very recently boiled kettle - I did this and it started showing the next day and was all germinated by day two

                two

Sounds like a plan - I find parsley takes ages to show.

I do the supermarket basil plant as mentioned above - buy it, split it into three pots and it usually grows away on the windowsill for the summer.

Coriander - I've only grown it one summer, I kept it under plastic. Last year, I tried it outdoors, it grew for a while but didn't really come to anything. I'm trying again this year though.

I planted some basil & parsley seeds last week and put them on my windowsill. The basil germinated within days and the parsley wasn't long after...I've never grown basil from seed before and I'd heard it was difficult to get it to germinate, but apparently not! I'm as un-green fingered as it's possible to be, I just bunged the seeds in a pot with some all-purpose compost, watered it and then left them to it.
