  • Potting on oregano

I sowed some oregano, unfortunately quite thickly, (they are very small seeds!) They now look suspiciously like cress
Question do I leave em to grow on in their largish pot or do I have to thin them to individual plants, which may take some time! Some are getting their real leaves now.
    Thanks in advance

Prick them out when they are large enough to handle with 2 or 4 true leaves, otherwise you may damage the tender seedlings. You may end up throwing quite a few seedlings away becuase they are too small, but how many oregano plants do you need? One or 2 plants is more than enough I find.

It can get pretty big too, I planted some up in a tub last year with a couple of other herbs. The oregano took over and how has the whole tub to itself. Split it the other day and gave part of it to a friend and still have plenty. Can't remember how many plants there were in there but it was probably somewhere between 1 and 10 originally from a thinly sowed 3" pot.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I wouldn't try to single them Fiona. Just let them grow on as they are. When they are bigger you can knock it all out of the pot, rip it into whatever number of pieaces you want and replant the clumps.
Oregano is pretty powerful stuff. How many plants do you think you want.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

As I said earlier I only want a couple for myself and a couple for a friend. I like the idea of growing it on and dividing. Less fiddly

Trust me! if you plant it out in the garden you will never need to plant it again, it seeds everywhere! But the bees adore the flowers, and it's quite pretty.

I sowed a whole packet of greek oregano in six 5 inch pots and they are all coming up they are gonna be great in the herb bed on the lotty next to the ordinary oregano. All I am going to do is plant the whole contents of the pots when they get a bit bigger, if you have a lot of seedlings growing in the pot then you can split the soil with a knife and seperate the sections you have cut into new pots packing out with more compost to fill the pot no harm will be done to the oregano and you will have some to give your freind.
