herbal remedies for horses?

Does anyone out there know about using herbs with animals? our pony has itchy, flaky skin around his mane and belly area. I have had the vet out to look and she gave us a special shampoo and told us to clip him, which we have done. She took a sample from his flaky area and said she thought it was harvest mites.
