  • Mint and lavender cutting help please!

I asked for and got some mint and lavender off a kind freecycler.

I've dug the mint out with a bit of root and just potted them on in compost and watered them in. Will they survive?

The lavender is about 10-15cm each and i've just stuck them in a pot of 50/50 compost/potting grit. Should I being doing anything special with them?

    Please help

And next time, I'll ask for help before collecting the plants.

    Hi BK

I found this site with links and details for cuttings. They show Lavender cuttings.
Taking Cuttings - The complete guide to plant propagation.

    Hope it helps

The mint will probably be fine, it roots even if you just stick it in a jar of water. If the lavender pieces are new long shoots with plenty of leaves up them then you can probably get 2 or 3 cuttings from each length, take a piece about 7 or 8 cms long and gently take all the leaves off the lower half, insert them into your pot of 50/50 compost/grit right up to where the leaves start. It will take time but you should get a good percentage rooting with softwood cuttings like these. It also often helps conserve moisture by putting a plastic bag over the pot, I actually use half a plastic drinks bottle, you can be certain then that it's not touching the leaves, which can cause the cuttings to develop mildew. Good luck.

Excellent, I'll be pottering out again in the dark to make sure they're all ok.

Think its quite difficult to kill mint (and believe me I've tried). Best to put it in a pot to keep it from taking over. Would think that lavendar is similar to rosemary which I have propogated, taking off bottoms shoots and dipping into rooting compound then putting in soil.
