How do you propagate sage?

I have a large sage plant in my back garden which has become to large & sprawling. I would like to dig it out but thought it may be an idea to take a cutting which could then be planted out in my herb bed on the allotment.
Is it possible to do this & if so how?

All I do is cut the top off a stem , about 3 inches long and put it in the ground . It always roots . I have a herb wall and the plants get too big for it in about 3 years , so I just take cuttings of each and when they have grown I dig the big plants out , put some new compost in to replenish and plant the new rooted cuttings .

I'm reliably informed that you can prune sage quite hard and it will come back and love you for it! As long as you don't cut into wood with no leaves.
It would be a shame to get rid totally of your garden specimen, if pruning could reduce it a bit. What if you fancy an impromptu stuffing? Ok, ok I just read that! It sounded so innocent in my head!
Anyway, you could still use the prunings for cuttings, and still have a decent amount of sage available for.....culinary use.
