I've taken some cuttings and dipped in rooting powder before potting them up into a pot, however, the tips have started drooping. Any idea why?

They are losing water through transpiration faster than they can take it up. You can remove a few more leaves, but an easier way is to just stick it in a glass of water and wait for it to root, then pot up into compost. Rosemary roots readily this way.

So what's better then?Stick the cuttings straight into the water covering up with a bag or rooting powder and compost?I'm asking because I tried to get some lavender from cuttings and it died. The same story with rosemary(tried to root them in compost and sharp sand mixture).

I have a lavender and 3 rosemary cuttings in the back garden now. Just straight into compost, all rooted easily.
Mind you did get my little girl to plant them in she has mysterious green fingered powers lol.
Must get it from my mum who once planted out a holly branch which had been in the house over christmas, and it still grew!

I rooted four rosemary cuttings on my kitchen window sill back in February.
I didn't use rooting powder, but they seem to root better if you put them round the edge of the pot of compost rather than the middle.
DEFINATELY put them into a plastic bag to conserve moisture! When the Devil gives you Cowpats - make Satanic Compost!

I've tried rosemary cuttings in compost (with and without rooting powder) and in water and never managed to get one to survive I've not resorted to trying to grow it from seed. I've heard it is hard to do but it can't be more of a disaster than my previous attemptsLast edited by Noodles; 08-05-2009, 03:40 PM.

About 2 weeks ago I got some rosemary from Morrisons-cut stalks. They were on sale as running out of date.Today I noticed 1st of them getting the root, the rest will probably follow as they look fine.So-no fancy compost, sharp sand mixtures, rooting powder and stuff like that, just plonked them into water and I'll have about 10 new rosemary plants for 50p.

I can't root rosemary at all, using any method. Rustylady can do it, so I nick hers.
As to lavender ... no plastic bag required (silver leaved plants hate humidity)

I wanted to make a little rosemary headge to go round 2 sides of my herb bed last year so I got a load of cuttings from a friend, stripped some of the lower leaves and took out the tips, dipped them in rooting powder and pushed them straight into the bed where I wanted them to grow - that was late summer early autumn 2008. they grew slowly but steadily over the autumn and winter and I regularly pinched out the growing tips to encourage them to bush out. Almost all of them took and I know have a small but lovely rosemary hedge
I think it was taking out the tips that made the difference as it then concentrates on rooting rather than the tip that was already growing.

can you take rosemary cuttings at any time? I could do with some more, and quite like the idea of a hedge. My current rosemary plant (yes I have only 1!) is getting a bit woody...!"A cat sees no good reason why it should obey another animal, even if it does stand on two legs."
