  • Rosemary germination

Got some rosemary seeds and they have been in compost for 2 weeks now in a heated propagator.

I know they take a while but are there any tricks to make sure they come up?

    Thanks

I've never tried rosemary from seed - it comes so well from cuttings. Has anyone here grown from seed?

Never grew it from seed - I find it roots easily from cuttings sitting in water.

I've read that you need to sow heavily as they may not all 'take' - also I've heard rosemary seeds are slow to germinate and may even take a couple of months before you see anything. I'd love to hear from anyone who's grown it from seed.

I'm trying but nothing has germinated as yet. They have been in the compost for 4-5 weeks.

I had the same problem too. On my third try I put the seeds in the fridge for one day before planting and they grew after one week.

Never seen or heard of growing rosemary from seeds. Keith, you must have much more patience, these are woody herbacious shrubs in effect and they will grow from seeds, you just need to put them outside somewhere warm and leave them there, check for weeds every week or so and just have patience - they have ONLY been in compost a short time and will grow when they want to, forcing them will do nothing to make them grow quicker.

I've tried rooting Rosemary cuttings tons of times but they've always died (despite following numerous sets of directions to the letter). I'm now attemping to grow them from seed as my poor plants can't keep up with the amount I use in cooking.

I sowed a handful of seeds into a pot of compost in the greenhouse a few weeks ago (I forget exactly when ) and now have 4 or 5 little shoots apearing. Fingers crossed they aren't just weeds!!

I'm trying some rosemary from seed-they are sitting in the trays for over a month and the germination is rubbish.I haven't got much luck with rosemary or lavender. They just don't like me

Hi all, just found this group and love it already! Spookily I noticed that the rosemary I'm trying to grow from seed had sprouted last night! Had almost given up hope as it's just been sitting on the dining table doing nothing but getting the occaisional water. That was 4 weeks from sowing.
