  • My mint smells... a little odd

I've got a young mint plant growing and I just had a little sniff and it's already really strong but it has a very slight eucalyptus smell to it and now my tongue and back of my throat has a little eucalyptus style numbing to it.

EDIT: Actually I have just looked at some young mint plants and mine dosen't actually look like the other pics.

Ok your right, it's sage! I've never smelt sage like it, the dry stff dosen't smell anything like this. Now I know why my cook books say to use fresh sage.

When is sage ok to pick?

Herby, sage is pretty robust, so as long as you don't strip it bare, it should be fine. At that small size, just a leaf or two if you want it.

Congratulations! (I hate mint!) I'd far rather have a sage bush - I always have at least 2 in the herb bed. It's a fantastic herb. Try making patties with mashed potato and some chopped sage - fry them and serve with cold roast pork. Hmmmm droool!

Veg seeds are another matter strange that.

Sage comes quite readily from cuttings.
To my mind, all mint smells odd!

My mint smells funny too, it's pineapple mint although the plug plant just said /mint' when I got it. Doea anyone know any good uses for pineapple mint, I just wanted normal mint to make mint sauce for O.H. with his lamb chops!
I like sage too, nice fried with pasta & risottos.
