  • crazy parsley

Last year i started parsley from seed in a pot, when the time came i planted it straight into ground, it has gone crazy!!!!! I know mint can grow crazily but parsley??? i've had to chop some today and freeze it in ice cube trays but there is still masses of the stuff growing, i'm hoping to make some parsley wine with whats left,

Can i then lift the plant then cut in half and put half back in ground?

Hi Veggielover, I wish I had that problem as I adore parsley and could eat it by the handful! No matter what I do my parsley just refuses to take. I've planted about 4 loads now, they do ok for a week or so, then wither away. I started the first couple in the ground (really heavy clay soil), but the last two I've tried in pots. How long does it take to grow from seed, and is curly or flat leaf easiest?

Mine is curly, i started from seed early last year, and it took a while to germinate but once it did it just grew so much i decided to start a herb bed......... so into the ground it went, along with thyme ( which died i'm guessing by suffocation from the parsley ) and chives, this year i have added oregano into the mix along with a sunken pot of mint and another thyme plant, my corianded ran to seed almost instantly it went into the ground along with the fennel which seemed to disapear........

Herb beds are nice to look at but next year i think i will just grow it all in pots!!! apart from the parsley... thats staying where it is!!!!

I don't think you'll have any success trying to split a plant but I know it seeds itself around where it's happy. I bought one several years ago and have new little parsley plants in my herb bed every spring. Just not in neat rows!

My parsley usually self-seeds itself, but last year ... nothing.

This year I sowed (flat leaf) in modules, 100% successful germination (apart from slugs eating half of the seedlings) and now they are growing on well on the lotty.

Ah Mac! They do say that parsley only germinates for whoever wears the pants in the family!

I imagine most of us garden in trousers? Last time I gardened in a skirt I was crouching to pull some weeds and a frog jumped up me leg. That was invigorating, I can tell you!
