  • What to plant with Borage in a pot?

    Hi All,

I have ordered some Borage seeds and would like to ideally sow it in a largish pot with some other herbs.

My question is, out of the following herbs, what should i plant with it (as i have read it is quiet invasive) or should i just sow it in a pot on it's own?

List of herbs/flowers i could plant it with: -
    Lemon Balm
    Parsley
    Thyme
    Marigolds
    Camomile

Also if you have any ideas on what herbs should be planted together out of the above list please let me know.

Any help on this would be appreciated

PS: sorry for posting it in wrong forum- didn't realise i was in wrong one and don't know how to move it- oops

Stick it in a pot on its own. It grows quite tall - at least it does in my garden - up to 3ft. And once you've got it you never need to buy it again. It seeds everywhere!

I love Borage. Lemon Balm is lovely too, and would make a good contrast as it is a different shade of green and lower growing, but the same could be said for any of the others too. Have fun experimenting!

Borage looks lovely but...what it can be used for?

Planted close to tomatoes it is said to improve the flavour. The leaves have a cucumber flavour and can be used in ice cubes for gin or pimms. Can be used to flavour pickled gherkins if you are growing these. Also leaves in salad garnish.

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

I am going to put the Borage into a pot of it's own and plant the rest into various pots together- i love the thought of using them for flavouring and medicinal purposes and hopefully they will look pretty too

I'm certainly looking forward to experimenting with the different herbs!

                Thanks again everyone

Just popped in here, I have a borage in a large pot [flowering nicely now] and popped a nasturtium in with it to flow over the side.

my borage is about 3 feet tall and in its own pot. Would love to try the ice cube idea however the taste of blackfly does not appeal to me.

I would try a cucumber, as they both go in Pimms ;-)

Don't put anything with lemon balm in a pot, it can be like mint and the roots form a fairly solid mass which you eventually may have to split with a knife. Not sure which colour borage you've ordered but there is s lovely white version which I have in my garden.

Apart from the suggestions already given it can also be made onto a liquid feed in the same way as Comfrey. It is very high in nitrogen and good for greedy veg such as melon and squashes.

The flowers can be eaten - I freeze them into ice cubes - brilliant in a G&T - and put them on salads.
