  • Curry Plant

    I put a curry plant in my herb garden last year, it didn't do to well, but is starting to do better this year.
    Question is - even though I picked it up from the herb section of a local garden centre I heard a comment somewhere that curry plant is not actually edible and has been known to be mildly poisonous.
    Does anyone know anything about this plant?

    I know you can't use it for curries. Dunno if its poisonous though

      Loads of stff we eat is mildly poisonous. Chocolate would poison you if you ate enough of it. I guess it would be poisonous if you ate about 20lbs of it, but you don't so it'll be OK.
      Garden centres wouldn't sell it in these litigious times if there was any risk attached.

        Curry plant only smells of curry. Apparently it tastes really bitter.

          I've thrown a sprig or two in with roast chicken before: Can't say it actually tasted of very much at all.

          Certainly not bitter (But then roast chicken always gets garlic and lemon as well!)

            No, I have heard its pretty but not worth flavouring food with and also thats its inedible.

              Ours has flowered. Can you do anything with the seeds (save plant them of course)?

                Hi I got one from a garden centre too and it grew well for 2 years then gave up the ghost! The lable said to use whilst cooking rice but then remove before eating - can't say that I noticed much taste though!

                  I have just got a curry plant and it smells lush, but I did not know you could not eat it so any info you get would be great

                    the herb plant from most garden centre's shouldn't be used for cooking i believe - great smell but thats it . If you want to add herbal curry to your cooking then you need Murraya koenigii
                    Its used in lots of curry dishes from Sri Lankra etc
