  • Horseradish

I planted a Horseradish root I bought from Wilkos back in Feb this year into a large pot. As far as I can tell it has done quite well, several healthy looking big long leaves drooping around for the past few months. But now it looks like it's dying back, some of the leaves have gone a reddish colour and some have died off completely. Any thoughts as to what I might be doing wrong? Or is this normal?

I can't believe I've found a way to kill it given all the comments I've read on here

It does much better in open ground. It's rampant on my lottie.

Mines absolutely enormous now its in the ground. It did scare me last Autumn, because the leaves all suddenly vanished, but it appears that is just what it does, because this year its bigger than ever. I'd get it in the ground or at least a much bigger pot if you can. It may be that it has got a bit stressed by the recent changeable weather.

Would a potato tub be big enough do you think for it? Hoping to get some planted at some point, but don't want to give it a whole bed.

It would want to be something pretty substantial as those roots mean business!! I think mine is half way to China by now. Possibly something like a very large tubtrug with holes in the bottom for drainage might keep it happy and still contain it.

Mine did very little the first year, but once it get's established, it's impossible to stand in it's way, I think the leaves die back so's it can creep up on you without you noticing

Thanks to all for the reassurance. It is in a very big pot and I am loath to put it in the ground considering how invasive it is. Hopefully it's just dying back naturally and will be back with a vengeance next year, after I've harvested a load to have with my roast beef or Sushi of course

Mine is in a big pot, (new thongs last year), and when I went to move the pot this year... It was stuck fast to the ground and had grown out of the holes in the bottom!
No telling where the horseradish will pop up next...
