  • Daft Question, Maybe??

I have two really healthy basil plants that i grew from seed and one what a neighbour bought me, the question is "could i over winter them, and if so where?", I have an unheated green house and south facing window's in the house. This is the first time i've grown basil and if at all i would like to save these plants.
    Thank you in advance xx

It's not worth it I reckon. The plants get quite woody and the leaves get smaller as the days get shorter. Sowing fresh each year gives you better plants with big aromatic leaves.

You can cheat and buy a growing plant from the supermarket, pick some leaves and then split it into about 3 clumps and pot on to grow on the windowsill. This works well for me.

Just sow some more. They like it warm so only widow cill will work.

Or you could take cuttings from the plants you've got and grow new ones. That's my plan for over the winter.

I always think basil is quite fussy to get started each Spring so I suspect you might have trouble maintaining it throughout the Winter, GN, without a lot of artificial support (heat and light) - but interested to see if you can.... I learned from elsewhere on this Forum that the easiest way to take basil cuttings is to root them in water - dead easy, works a treat every time, long roots in just a few days. A standard way of having a supply through the Winter has been to chop and freeze in ice cubes but last week on 'GW' Toby Buckland suggested just cutting it, folding into silver foil and freezing... He also gave the tip to cut on a warm morning (do we have those?) when the oils are at their most pungent. Such cuttings won't take any space in the freezer so that's the one for me this year.... b.
