Growing Ginger.

I've been thinking of growing ginger, I've never grown it before so I really don't know the first thing about it. Is it worth haveing a go? Or do I stick to shop bought?
My questions are:-
1. When and where is the best time to plant it?
2. What is the best growing compost and pot to grow it in?
3. How long will it take?
4. Can I use shop bought ginger that's started to put out shoots?
5. What's your experience and thoughts on growing ginger?

Any advice will be very much appreciated,

Hi Ginger - how appropriate! I have been looking into growing some myself but I don't have a proper greenhouse. I'm going to have to treat it like a houseplant so I hope it doesn't grow a huge panoply of leaves.

I had a piece of shop bought ginger in a pot for several years. Had to put it in a large margarine tub eventually as it had a habit of pushing the plastic plant pots out of shape, into an oval shape. I kept it on the kitchen window sill which is SSE facing and gets lots of sun. It seemed happy enough until I over watered it.

I bought a tiny bit of ginger from the supermarket which had a node on it, and it grew for a couple of years, giving me ginger every year, lots of it. I also overwatered mine last winter, so am having to start again, but I didnt find it difficult to grow at all.
Chucked it in a 3"pot in normal cheap French compost, and left it in the greenhouse. No worries for me at least.
