  • Dill???

    Hi Guys

    I'm a complete beginner!

I grew dill for the first time over the summer and it seems to have gone a bit wild .... Should I cut it back, it is growing in my garden.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Hi maddy,
And welcome to the vine, Dill dose have a tendency to go a bit mad, you could cut it back it's hardy to -4c, but to be honest you might as well sow some more seeds in April. It's very easy to grow. If its in a sunny spot why not grow some sage, rosemary, thyme with it and make yourself a little herb garden. If you grow mint put it in a large pot and keep near your back door. You can't go wrong with herbs.

GN is quite right but I reckon you will lose it over the winter anyway. I know I always do. I'd take some flower heads off (they will by now be seed heads anyway) and put them in a paper bag before you cut it back. That way you can start your own seeds off again next year. Everybody knows I'm cheap like that.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

The only thing I would add about growing Dill, is that if you plan on growing Fennel, keep the two of them apart - they don't like each other

That's what I like to hear, someone being assertive and putting there foot down in the garden, especially on a slug or snail, you go girl.

We chop our dill up fine (not that it's not fine leaved anyway!) and keep it in the freezer in a small lidded pot.

I think Dill's an annual. Fennel is the perennial version.

My dill flowered and died off about 6 weeks ago. Had meant to sow some more for later use but forgot!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Dill is a not very hardy short-lived perennial (about 4 years in ideal conditions). Rarely survives UK winters though. Technically hardy to a quick -4C but actually a few nights at even -1C will kill it.
