Is it ok to dig up and split my chives at this time of year? There's a young woman at work who is really keen to have a go at growing herbs, so I thought it would be nice to take her some.

I split a clump last week and bunged them in a pot with multi-purpose compost. They'll be overwintered in a cold greenhouse to give us an early start next year. Chives don't seem to mind being disturbed. Mine came from a lady in the village who split a big clump a couple of years ago. they were left sweating in a plastic bag for a week before I got round to planting them!!

Good time to move them and they can make a rather nice decorative edging to a bed!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

The soil is warmer at this time of year compared to the spring- best time to move most things , especially as they die back ( do tell your friend that they WILL die back, and she's not killed it!!!!)"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple
