Is it ok to dig up and split my chives at this time of year? There's a young woman at work who is really keen to have a go at growing herbs, so I thought it would be nice to take her some.

I split a clump last week and bunged them in a pot with multi-purpose compost. They'll be overwintered in a cold greenhouse to give us an early start next year. Chives don't seem to mind being disturbed. Mine came from a lady in the village who split a big clump a couple of years ago. they were left sweating in a plastic bag for a week before I got round to planting them!!

They'll be fine, and it'll do yours good to get a bit more space

Good time to move them and they can make a rather nice decorative edging to a bed!

The soil is warmer at this time of year compared to the spring- best time to move most things , especially as they die back ( do tell your friend that they WILL die back, and she's not killed it!!!!)

I move and re pot a lot of my herbs at this time of year, I split my chives into smaller clumps it give them more room to spread out, I took 12 Rosemary cuttings yesterday for a friend so she can make a hedge at her allotment.

Do chives still die back if I overwinter them in my greenhouse ?
