Picked up some 4L specimens the other day and was chatting to the herb nursery owner about pruning. He swears by cutting back very early Spring ... if you have clay soil. Basically if you cut in Autumn (as per most text books) what tends to happen is that when the clay ground becomes saturated in winter the herb plant cannot soak up the excess water and basically drowns.
If the plant still has all of its foilage (even if it is dying back) then it has more of a chance of coping.
