Right - my ginger has been planted for a little while and has a shoot of about an inch and a half. Will get a photo sorted out when I get batteries for the camera!
I have a piece of ginger in my fruit bowl which has formed a bud and is about to spring into life. Anyone want it? PM me if you do.
I think the fact I kept both of them in the fruit bowl may have got them started into growth but that is just a theory.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Yet another week later & more growth. Do I start feeding now or wait until it flowers, assuming it does flower...........

        Yipeeeeeeeeeeee

Went into Morrisons yesterday to do my shopping and managed to find four sprouting pieces of ginger root. Time to get it planted I think.

Quick update on my other pieces that I got at the end of the 2009 but did not plant as they had not sprouted. Still not sprouted neither in dark cupboard or suspended in water so think these are a non starter so will eat them instead.

Glad to be off and running so to speak

Any takers for my spare piece of ginger root that's sprouting? I'd hate to waste it!

ETA - posted on another thread and now promised to a new ginger grower!

Well... two attempts - two have found mould/rot starting.

I'll have to have a proper look for the triangle eyes next time :/

              Late starter here.

I suspended a piece in some water today.

I tried planting a piece last year but think I put it too deep, it didn't come to anything so fingers crossed this time.

Finally got round to planting my 4 pieces today, each is in a 6 inch plant pot of Wilkinson Seed and Potting Compost, watered lightly. Forgot to soak overnight as per instruction, hope its OK. Will be putting them in my unheated conservatory. Will let you know if or when I have any signs of growth.

My ginger is still sprouting - has sprouts just showing the green growing tips. Do I give it another week or so?

When I went on holiday I put my little pots of ginger in the propagator. On my return I was delighted to see a really healthy looking shoot and a strong root. It must have enjoyed being covered in used teabags.

Well, BM - yours is by far the best ginger so far! How did you get yours to start sprouting? Did it have a green shoot on it before you planted it? How warm did you keep it to get it going? Do you keep the compost on the moist or dry side?

Wow Bigmally your specimens are amazing. I feel a tad embarassed to show mine.

This had no sprout at all when I placed it on top of moist soil. I did not soak it first just kept it most with tea bags.
