I think you may have started a technique for getting it to sprout, Brengirl - I just bunged mine in the fruit bowl until it grew a green shoot.
Here is mine, sitting beside the chilli.

Nice one Jeanied. The chilli is great too. Was it from seed?

The chilli was a bought one from the garden centre, dug up in October and still producing purple chillis (not so evident from the photo though!)
Ooh - it just occured to me - could I grow the seed from these fresh chillis as well?

            Thanks Jeanied.
Mine started sprouting through neglect, it was just a piece of shop bought that started sprouting itself.
Once the sprout was about 2cm, I potted it up under compost so that only the sprout showed.
It's been kept in the shower room windowsill ever since, which I must admit is very warm as the radiator in there does not have a thermostat on it. I water the ginger as you would any plant as needed.

BM do you think I should put mine in a little deeper when I pot it on? It has the bulbous bit at the base of the shoot sticking out of the compost at the moment - just about visible in my pic. Ginger Ninger's original post on how to grow it does talk about keeping it on the damp side but I was getting concerned about it all rotting.

OMG, I've become a Ginger advisor...........
All I can say is I think I have been lucky, I have no root showing above soil level. This is not to say it is the coorrect way to grow it but at the moment is working for me.

I planted a bit of sprouting ginger in the summer of last year. It produced one long stem and died down ove the winter. It's been in the spare room since.
I've had a little furtle and there appears to be a fleshy white "root" or maybe a stem coming out of the bottom of the old stump.
Do you think it's started into life again? I've given it a soak and moved it to the kitchen windowsill. Fingers crossed for a re-birth.

Mr OWG bought me some ginger from a well known DIY-store... I want to plant it, but do I have to plant the whole root, or can I break bits off and do seperate plants?

I'd be tempted to put it in water till it sprouts then plant it. If you get more that one sprout then divide it.

I am so pleased with my ginger. The 4 pieces are progressing well. I know I am jumping the gun but when do I transplant to final pot and roughly how long to maturity and what do I do then. Is it just for display purposes or can I harvest it.

It's no use you bumping Brengirl (a little too much reminiscent of the recession thread?) - I want to see photos of your ginger! Last we saw of it, it was all fresh and new from its teabags! I will post a piccie of mine when I've got some new batteries for the battery gobbling camera!
