  • Okay silly questions, I must have missed it somewhere.

I go out buy a bit of ginger root, leave it somewhere dark to sprout, or do I put in water???

then put it in compost, out of the sun and wait for it to grow?

once it grows, and here is the silliest question, what happens, what do I harvest and when?

    • I think you will find the answers mostly on the first post in this thread, tick9. We are all still scratching our heads to be honest -the ginger root seems to have a will of its own. I did find that soaking mine for a few days has encouraged the sprout to form a little point and start to green up a bit.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      • Well my ginger definitely is barmy. If not, it doesn't have great life expectency.

        • Jeanie - there must be something about you that makes ginger sprout!

Someone on the turmeric thread mentioned Spices of India..and they import FRESH turmeric roots, ginger, galangal and other stuff. Am very tempted to do a bit of an order. I will use it all in cooking anyway.

Oooh and they sell pomace olive oil in 5L tins so that would be great for my soapmaking.

It won't be hard to spend £30 there to get free delivery. I think a 10kg bag of a rice is in order too!

          • I read somewhere that ginger like to grow under overhanging branches if that makes sense so mine has been moved underneath my palms. I guess they like dappled sunlight.

            • that seems a good idea Bigmall. Mine are going from bad to worse even. Becasue the young leaves look so dry and the new leaf is having trouble to unfurl I have covered mine with upturned lemonade bottles. I thought the humidity may help.

              • I planted up a Ginger tuber today. Apparently as long as there is a knobly 'eye' somewhere on tuber and it is only slightly covered with compost it should sprout np! I'll post back if there's any signs of life!

Slighty off topic but they are both Thai cooking food I put some lemongrass in water today, when should I expect to see roots forming and when should I pot them up?

                        • I've potted up my JeanieGinger (yes, I name houseplants) and have a purpley looking shoot. I also potted up one I found with a teeeeeeny bump (found it in a recent food order) and have another piece in water. Hopefully I won't kill all of them. I'm awful with houseplants.

                          • Sonata that made me chuckle! At least one of my originals is still alive!
I am just about to give up on my original ginger - which I photographed and put in one of my albums on here - the green shoot has died off completely leaving a green bump sticking out of the soil. I'm ready to turn it out of the pot.
But wait! All is not lost!! Just starting to peek out of the soil is a tiny purple / red shoot!!
