I grew some garlic chives from seed about 14 years ago. They moved house with me 10 years ago, and they come every year. I dont know if they are fussy but mine are in shade and are slow to come up every year. I weeded around them yesterday and they havent appeared yet - where as the normal chives are coming up strongly. I wont worry as I know they will make an appearance when they are ready. Mine have never really spread so soil and location may be wrong.

I grew some in a long thin box last year, they came up very spindly, they were just in normal compost, they've made an appearance again this year, and I moved them to a deeper bed with normal soil, they look a bit happier now.

I moved to a house once where they'd been left to self seed all over the garden and forever came up again through our new lawn despite mowing so removal of seed heads is recommended!

In answer to the question tho' they can be a bit erratic to germinate. One or two will come up and maybe nothing for a couple of weeks but eventually the overall coverage is ok (although not as good as chives) so don't give up on them too early.

My garlic chives didn't die back over winter, apart from the seed heads and stems. They're now filling out more in addition to the leaves already there

I have some sown from seed in a pot this year. I must say, I'm disappointed by the taste. They don't taste either garlicy or oniony. Maybe the plants are too young? Does the taste develop with age?

I sowed some and nothing has happened. I'll try again as I like the sound of edible flowers.

I've not tasted them as I grow them for the lovely flowers, but they defintiely smell garlicky - are you sure they are Garlic chives?

Do they do the same job deterring carrot fly as normal chives do? I just planted a row alongside my carrots and didn't have enough, so was going to buy more. Is it better to just go for normal chives?

I bought some as last years didn't make it through the winter either. Not tried seed so will be interested to see how easy they are to germinate.

I tried seed last year & failed miserably, will be trying again this year though.

Mine have germinated very slowly but I now have about 2 dozen X one inch high plants.

Mine didn't do great sowing direct last year, so have done them in pots this year - are about 1- 11/2 inches now. Normal chives are a little smaller.

We grew some chives in pots last year and are contemplating putting them along the back in our newest raised bed. Will they end up taking over the bed if we do this??

My mum has a dedicated bed just for these things. SHe always offers to pull some up for me to plant but I always decline as I find they stink! (I'm not a garlic fan!) These things come every year looking green and bushy like flat blades of grass.

You can snip the leaves and stir-fry on own or added to beansprout stir-fry. Or snipped into omelettes are good. Or even better, into minced pork to make garlic and chive pork dumplings.
