  • Bay bush growth?

I have a huge bay bush in my garden and when weeding I noticed a fluffy spotted growth going up the main stalk. I picked a bit off with my trowel and it appears to have a black gooie centre. Can anyone suggest what this is and if it is harmful to the plant?

Is there any chance of you posting a picture, Poppyfield? It may be an insect infestation but it is a bit difficult to tell from your description.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
