  • Savory - Summer or Winter

I have been trying to find the herb savory. to go with my Jerusalem Artichokes, I understand it takes the fartichoke out of artichoke, but can't find any here where I live in Bedford. Is there an alternative to Savory which has the same effect?

The thing in JAs that makes you parp is inulin, which some people can't digest. Does savory neutralise that then?

I've been delighted with my purchases from Marshland Herb Nursery. The plants were in good condition, were very reasonably priced and are flourishing now. To illustrate, I paid the following: Vietnamese Coriander - £1.90; Chicory £1.50; Fennel £1.90; Lemon Grass £2.90; Lemon Verbena £2.30; Blackcurrant Sage £1.90; Lemon Thyme - £1.70; Winter Savory -£1.90. P&P was £6.95

Now all I have to do is to work out how to protect them next winter and when would be a good time to take cuttings!

Apparently it combats the wind and makes them more digestable when cooked with it! I saw this on a television programme. All I need to know now is where to buy the stuff. Don't particularly whant to buy online as always get stung with P & P. Of course there may be another way to combat this when cooking it?!

Do have a look at Marshland Herbs. Although the P&P was not cheap (but it is graduated depending on how many plants you're buying) the original cost was low and the plants were in very good condition on arrival. You should see my Vietnames coriander now!

I thought summer savory was an annual that doesn't like being moved so is best grown from seed?

You'll be saving on petrol though, and all those other purchases that look so tempting when you visit the garden centre.

I've had a quick look round the web and can't find any definite info on savory really being able to combat flatulence, just rumour & hearsay.

Still, it looks like a nice herb, I think I'll get some. £3 from here

There is some information about using winter savoury to combat the side effects of beans on this link here
It struck me as logical to use the winter variety to use with JAs as that is when you tend to cook them!

Alys Fowler made a JA dish on her Veggie growing programme and put savory into it to combat the windy effects. I've been looking too. Will try Marshland herbs as recommended by grannymem.

You can buy the seed cheaply on ebay.
