Is it OK cut back/prune leggy lavender bushes at the end of June?

There are a couple of lavender bushes in my parents' garden (in the ground) - approximately 20-30cm high - which have become really leggy and spindly and don't look so attractive. The plants themselves don't look too unhealthy, just not very bushy. They haven't flowered yet this year.

Would it be OK to give them a bit of a 'haircut' now at the end of June - will that encourage new/bushier growth - or do I have to wait until July/August and prune them after they have flowered (if they flower at all)? Thanks!

I usually give them a trim after flowering. If you cut into the old woody bit though, they may not regenerate. It's usually better to replace really old woody plants.

If you trim them before they flower you'll probably cut off the flowers. What you can do now is take some cuttings. Take lots, they won't all work.
