rst- you really need to decide which herbs you'd like to grow- and then which are the best for you to grow.
Mint is a thug , and difficult to kill off, basil is the other extreme- a chill wind and overwatering will kill it off.
The idea of herb beds are nice- but you need to match up your plants needs .

I'd buy mints now- and sow chives- they'll make a good start now, die back and grow on well in the Spring

Hi rst, can I make a suggestion? Why don't you pop onto the 'Introduce yourself' section, start a new thread and tell us a bit about yourself and what you're trying to achieve with your garden/allotment. Also, could you put your location into your profile. You needn't be specific, but sometimes it help us answer questions, especially ones that relate to weather and climate.

          Best Regards
          PB

I buy seeds on Ebay and seeds do stay OK for several years. Saves petrol and often a keen price.

Sutton are on line too and I buy the more exotic stuff there !

Lemon grass, Fennel, Peppermint and Mint have grown OK this year from seed.

Dill plant from a shop grew ok.

Technically I'm a newbie so if I can get them to survive you may do well with them.

Last year Chives did well and I've still got them.

Rocket I'm trying with and the seeds germinated ok.

Sage is OK- but needs clipping to keep it controlled in spread and height. Tarragon is tender.

As PB suggest- introduce yourself and esp a location- if you are posting from the north of Scotland things would be very different from if you lived in Kent for eg

might be worth developing a little bit of patience too. Read up on the things you want to plant, see how long they take to grow, make a plan of your growing area, see where you can fit things in, either in the ground or in pots.

Just an idea but if you're desperate to have some herbs growing now , why don't you pop into somewhere like tesco's and buy a pot of ready growing herbs. You can keep them on your windowsill .

So, Steve, are you from Cardiff then...?!

Good call with Jekka, a couple of thymes from there are the only ones I've ever managed to get to live for more than one winter

                          Could well be!!!

Jekkas herbs always last a long time for me.
Have recently been to an open day at her farm bought lots of Basils, well at least 5.

Jekka is always nice to talk to and very knowledgeable on herbs.
