  • Mint looking sick?

    Hi,

My mint was looking and tasting fine earlier in the summer but it's suddenly gone a bit sick looking. I have two mint plants each in a pot (that aren't massive pots) but there are some dark brown blotches on the leaves in places.

Should I cut it right back? Or is there anything else I could do?

Any advice gratefully received. Hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere, if it has perhaps someone could direct me to the thread.

    Thanks again!

Sounds like a case of pot bound and mint rust.

Mint in pots need a really big pot and also needs to be split and replanted each year. Just a few stolons replanted, I do mine in early spring before it starts growing.

Mint rust, well I just chop mine right down and it comes back well. Just means you are without mint for a while.

    Hope this helps.

Chop them back, possibly put in a bigger pot or give a feed. Mine's looking very tired at the moment.

Brilliant, thanks a lot for that advice. Off out to do some cutting and re-potting!

One other question. When I cut the mint back can I compost it? Or if it's mint rust should I put it in the council brown bin?

If in doubt give it to the council. That's my motto, anyway
