how to prune lavender tree?!

We bought 2 lavender "trees" for our wedding (were much cheaper than bay trees, especially when on sale in aldi) & they are growing like wildfire & have now flowered.... how on earth do i prune them?! if i only cut into new growth i dont think ill be pruning them back into neat ball shapes (like they were when we bought them in april)...
any help please?

Ive added a pic of one of them to show you what i mean... (excuse the chives pushing in on the pic, ive got more than i know what to do with!)

Clip them back to the ball shape - just make sure you don't cut below the bottom leaf in any of the branches. I have trimmed my lavender edging with the shears to re- impose the shape.

even if the cuts are below the new growth? i hate pruning anything so this will tip me over the edge after my blackcurrants & blackberries!

I'd trim just the flowers and an inch or two off all the way around at this time of year. Then in spring after the frosts trim back a bit harder into the ball shape again.

never cut lavender back into old wood: you may well get die back
