  • leggy coriander

    Hi,

I've successfully (albeit inconsistantly) germinated some coriander seeds.

They are now out of the heated propagator in coir plugs.

Each plug has two seedlings (even though I planted one seed) - should I thin one of them out?

Also about half of them are really leggy (6cm) should I discard them or pot them on at a more sensible level in the soil. I've had the same experience with some parsley (leggy) should I also be putting the plants deeper in soil.

When should I harden them off in my cloche - it's really cold at the moment? But my wife is giving me grief about how many seedlings I have in our small terraced house!!

    Sorry about all the questions.

    thx

Corriander is notorious for 'running to seed'. I've seen an old chap on a gardening programme gently rolling a bottle over the seeds to crack the outer coating and he said just keep planting and use before they shoot to seed. Hope this helps. Cheers, Tony.

Bit early to be germinating coriander IMHO. Once germinated they need to be in as light a position as possible.

I have the same- thought I'd give a bargain reduced Suttons herb pack a go- the thyme wimped up about an inch then sulked, the basil rotted and the coriander sounds about the same as yours. FYIW I've just pricked them out and repotted in 7.5cm pots but it is looking pretty sad. On our kitchen windowsill, moderately warm and gets reasonable sun.

I'm going to now as well, hahahaha

Your seedlings are leggy because you've started them when the daylight is too low, and daylength is too short. Try again in a month

When you do, try rubbing the seed gently until it breaks in half and soak for 72 hours before planting. This is from this book. Also it neds 21C to break dormancy.

Thanks for the advice, perhaps I've been too quick off the mark. March it is then!!

I managed to get some Thyme to germinate and mine is exactly the same. Roll on some brighter warmer weather!!
