  • herbs for shade.

Im planting up my borders with herbs but one side is more shaded then the other. Which hardy herbs dont mind some shade and which should I put on the brighter side??
(the shady side does get sun in the morning for about 4-6 hours).

I successfully grow chives, oregano, mint and parsley in an area with only a couple of hours direct sunlight a day. I have to resow the parsley every year but the others come through the winter ok.

My herb bed gets only morning sun, and it has all the usual suspects - rosemary, thyme, oregano, tarragon, parsely (successfully overwintered!), hyssop, sage, valerian, chamomile (i drink the tea!).

So as long as your soil isn't waterlogged, you should be just fine!

If the river hasn't reached the top of your step, DON'T PANIC!

Angelica can grow so tall it can be used for shade ! ! ! Cheers, Tony.

One of the most valuable herbs (indeed, plants) in my plot is comfrey. It doesn't mind shade, and it produces fertiliser/compost/mulch for half the year

(my other favourite herb, banana, can't be grown in a shady UK garden)
