  • Can I move any of these herbs outside?

Hello! I am new here and hoping for some advice. I have grown some herbs indoors and they are getting overcrowded. This was my first attempt at growing herbs from seed and some are still small considering the time of year, but I want to keep them as healthy as I can nevertheless. I have space in the front garden, which is south of my house, and has a tall hedge to the west. There is also some space here and there to the north of the house. Most of it is quite sheltered but there are some sunny spots.

I have basil, parsley, oregano, and thyme. (I also have mint but plan to keep that contained.) I won't be heartbroken if the perennials don't come back next year but would be very happy if they did. I have been hesitating to place them outside because of the terrible weather we have been having, but would it be safe to do so? I am wondering if they might be happier in the ground despite the weather since they would finally have a decent amount of space.

    Thank you in advance!

I'd put them all out except for the basil, I've never had any success with outdoor basil and just keep them in the greenhouse now.

    And welcome to the vine

Thank you! Should everything be okay in the front garden I described? There is the most room there. It gets a lot of sun until the hedge shades it when the sun starts to go down more (I can't remember when that happens). I have just been worried about things drowning with all of this rain, and the fact that it has been so cool.

Yeah, they will be fine there. Mine are in partial shade and do really well. No wonder you can't remember when the sun goes down, it's been so long since we've seen it

You would probably be advised to harden them off first, it's not something I tend to do but I wouldn't like anything to happen to them if you didn't.

If your garden is prone to water logging you might want to put them in pots but if it is free draining they should be fine with the rain.

Thank you! I'm happy to read that. I've been feeling bad for my dill in particular. I'm going to try to start moving everything tomorrow. It doesn't seem like there is a problem with water logging there.

I harvested most of my dill a few weeks ago and froze it, left the rest to go to seed and got such a shock the other day when I went down to the plot and they were about 5ft tall and needing staked.
