  • New herb trough

    Evening folks

Ive a 4 foot trough that im looking to plant herbs that we can use in the kitchen. Anyone got any suggestions on what herbs go well together?

    Cheers folks

Can I suggest you don't put mint in it? It spreads everywhere. Also most herbs like Mediterranean growing conditions, whereas mint likes it a bit damper and cooler. If you wanted mint you could contain it in a bottomless pot, sunk into your trough, to restrict spreading. Thyme, marjoram and sage are all low growers. There's a low growing rosemary which might be better than the taller upright one. Chives? Depends a bit what you like to eat.

Start by choosing the herbs that you like to use in the kitchen!
How deep/wide is the trough as some of the perennials need plenty of space - rosemary, sage, fennel.
Mint and lemon balm are invasive and will take over so are better in their own space.

        The trough is 1135mm Long x 510mm Wide x 300mm Deep. (44" x 20" x 12" approx)

        Often cook with
        Parsley
        Rosemary
        Thyme
        Bay Leaves
        Coriander

But wouldnt mind using chives and sage

        Cheers

You could probably get all of those in if you keep the plants small. Rosemary and thyme could sprawl over the front (if you buy the right sorts). Put the Bay and sage towards the back and fill in the middle with chives (perennial) and parsley and coriander (treat as annuals). That's my version anyway - I'm sure someone else will have other ideas for you!

You want to make a list of the herbs that you eat (or would like to eat), then go from there.

I'd pot them all individually and put the pots in the trough, just cos you can treat them all seperately
