Lavender

I think lavender is a herb?

I have quite a lot of it growing along one side of my herb bed. I'm just wondering how much I should trim it down, there's a lot of deadish looking stems. I'm always reluctant to chop anything too much but maybe new growth comes from the base of the plant?

I grew the lavender from seed and it's taken years for it to turn into established plants,
this is the first year I feel I should do something to it.

I trim mine late summer after its finished flowering but not down to old wood remember to leave some green stem showing plus I take cuttings at the same time.

Leave it till the main risk of frost has passed, if you cut it and get a bad frost it can kill it.
Like bren says too, leave some green shoots

No new growth comes from the old wood but as your lavenders grow you may need to cut out a complete branch of old wood, just to keep it in shape.
