  • rosemary and thyme help from seed

I bought one of these Stewart kitchen garden herb pots and popped in some rosemary and thyme then later read it can take 15 months for the rosemary to get to a point you can pick harvest, is this true and am I wasting my thyme (uh. Pun Lol)

Probably true If you want rosemary this year you'll have to buy a plant or "borrow" some . If you take some cuttings you can root them up quite easily but they still will be too small to pick from this year.

I grew rosemary from seed once and it did seem to take forever, much easier to take cuttings if you can.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Cuttings that they sell in the supermarket for use in cooking will root too.
Even ones on the sell off

I gave up with Rosemary seeds I couldn't get any of them to germinate so I did 10 cuttings and out of those I've go 2 plants.

Just done a whole proporgator box on thyme thinking I'd prick out a few but I've literally got hundreds, should I really just pinch out individually and throw the rest or should I pot a bunch together? Completely new to this so don't have a clue what I'm doing and really learning as I go and googling lol. Out of all the herbs I seeded last autumn I was literally left with one sage and one oregano lol! Both are I'd say established now and blossoming. All my seedlings seem to be doing well this year though

Thyme, shouldn't be a problem. I was lucky enough to get a small pot full through fluke.

                Going slightly off-topic:

I've started off some rosemary in large bottomless pots in a bed this year - I'm hoping the will survive the winter. Apart from maybe covering them during the harshest weather - are there anymore tips to ensure they flourish next year (i.e. do I cut them back, etc. ??)

They need good drainage, full sun if possible.

As to cutting them back, don't cut into old wood. Best way to keep them in shape is to cut for use little and often.

                    Thanks for this.

They are fairly small at the moment - I don't really intend to take much this year.
