  • Can I plant a rosemary bush in January?

Hello. It's DH's birthday at the end of Jan and I'd like to get him a rosemary bush, something I know he wants. If we get one then, is it safe to plant it out with frosts and likely snow still to come, or should we cosset it in the house til the spring? Or should I give him an IOU for a rosemary bush and buy it later in the year?

    Thank you
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Wherever you get a rosemary bush from, it will have been sitting outside, in its pot, so planting it out straight away won't hurt it as long as the ground is not frozen. Once its in the ground, the frosts won't bother it as long as its not waterlogged.
    Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
    Endless wonder.

If you are buying one in a pot from a garden centre or plant nursery it'll be kept outside and used to the cold weather!

If you think your garden may be more exposed than where you buy it from then pop a bit of bubblewrap around the pot until you decide to plant it out.

They really don't like cold wet soil so have a look on the internet how best to prepare the soil.

I think it's a brill idea for a pressie! Good choice!

I would put the pot close up by the house wall and out of the way of too much rain. Then in March plant it out. House walls are very under-utilised as far as frost protection is concerned and also for keeping plants like rosemary which don't want too much water.

A neighbour on our plot has a rosemary bush is it possible to take a cutting to grow one?

            Thanks

Yes- I'm going to do this later on in the Spring.
I've read up a lot about it and most sites seem to suggest in the Spring for cuttings.
However- this site suggests now is OK

I suppose it depends on the weather.

I'd take cuttings now if i was worried that I might lose the mother shrub...but probably better in a few more weeks.

MrsC...perhaps worth taking a few cuttings if it's big enough???
