Lavender

I have just bought a lavender plant today. I have never grown it before so is there any hints and tips you can all give me on how to keep it alive?

My boyfriend keeps saying the sent of the lavender plant can cause problems(periods)? Is this true?

Lavender is supposed to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps, no idea if that's true, but I love the scent of lavender. Plant it somewhere hot and dry, it's a sun lover from the Med, so likes well drained soil that's not too rich.

I trim mine twice a year, late summer when the flowers start to fade, I clip down to within 3 - 6 inches of brown wood,and again in late March I go over the whole hedge with shears, clipping off between one and two inches all over, which encourages the plants to stay neat, get more bushy, and make more flowers.

1) keep it on the dry side (it's Mediterranean)
2) never prune back into old wood (it'll die)

Back to Lavender, personally I can't abide the scent, but it's such a lovely plant that it has to have a place in the garden. Just not where I'm sitting. I spent over an hour today, hand weeding a new ornamental Lavender bed. Puuuuuke! But very pretty!

I have two lavender plants, one at the end of my runner bean trench and another in a pot which moves around according to what needs to attract bees. The both smell lovely. My husbands idea . 😀

I used to hate the smell of lavender but now I am an old lady, I like it! Arsenic and old lace anyone?

I have grown lavender for years and can safely say I have never had a menstrual cramp.

It always tries to grow on top and gets a bare woody bottom so keep it pruned as suggested above.

Thanks I am going to try and put it in another pot before the rain starts. Shall I keep it in my greenhouse when it rains?(with people saying it like it hot) or is it okay in the rain?

It will be fine in the rain as long as it doesn't get waterlogged. It is hardy so it won't need greenhouse treatment unless it is still in its pot and we have deep frost or snow.

This is one plant I have never been able to keep alive...until this year! Unfortunately though it has grown back very sparsely and woody with very few flowers! Just don't have those green fingers I'm afraid.
