Problems with growing Rosemary

You can always 'drop' your old Rosmary, Potty! Dig a deep hole and drop it in, so,only the nice bit remains above ground. Like Willow, it will put out roots up the stem, and just keep right on growing, unlike most other plants.

Is this possible/advisable for other plants?

I think so Avid, for a lot of herbs you can take cuttings, just drop them into a pot with compost and it'll take quite happily. I tend to have three out of four taking hold and growing into plants.

Rosemary likes heat, not too much water, but a fair good feed every now and again. And I quite like when they go woody - they're beautiful and gnarly I think, so as long as there's some green, I let the plants hang around way past before their best

Parsley is another one that I really struggle to grow from seed - they just never seem to take at all.

I buy pots from supermarkets and divide them very carefully and plant into a fairly large pot.. that lasts me the summer and usually gives a healthy supply
