  • How many plants to a pot?

I've never had any joy with growing herbs- but then again they're always an afterthought and not taken care of properly!

This year, as usual I've thrown various seeds into pots and I've got loads of seedlings. I suspect after reading other threads on here that I need to thin them out to succeed, so was hoping someone here might be able to tell me how many seedlings to nurture per pot? Or is that just an easy fix that won't work?

Pots are the round ones, about 4-5" circumference and about the same depth. Currently residing in my mini greenhouses.

Have got seedling action with thyme, rosemary, tarragon, oregano, mustard leaves, spearmint, dill, parsley, basil, marjoram. Most pots have about 20 shoots though the thyme and spearmint have significantly more.

Presumably they are in a low nutrient seed compost. In which case I would pot on as many as I needed into module trays with a compost made up of MPC and grit (or perlite), as most herbs are from the Mediterranean and like a good drainage. Once they have filled the modules you can start to think about spacing them out into their permanent home.
If you aren't going to prick them out I'd leave about 6 to a pot but eventually they will need moving on.
