  • Supermarket thyme vs. Welsh winter

    Hi all,
I bought a thyme plant - or loads of little plants, more likely! - from waitrose.. Can I bung it straight out into my burgeoning herb/flower border do you think or should I give it a bit of cosseting indoors for a few weeks (months?) before releasing it into the wild?
I'm guessing it's pretty hardy as it's alpine but then again it also likes hot places and sunshine, hence the head scratching.
    Advice greatly appreciated, as ever!

Cosset it! Its come from a hot shop and you're thinking of bunging it out in the freezing Welsh air!
If it was sold as an indoor plant for fresh herbs - its less hardy than one from a garden centre. If there are several seedlings in one pot, you could pot them up individually and grow them on a bit before releasing them into the garden.

When you say it like that.. Good point! I'll separate it out and cosset it until it's strong enough to cope - thanks!

Anglesey isn't as sunshiny as South Wales - so give it a bit of love...

I'll add - when it's warm enough to plant it out remember to harden it off first.
          Another happy Nutter...

I've had problems with plants from waitrose in the summer - definitely take extra care of it in winter
