Pot sizes?

Last year I started some herbs off in my raised beds but now I've been offered a plot, I need to move them. Currently I don't have somewhere on the new plot to give them a permanent home so I'm going to have to put them in to pots. Trouble is, I have no idea how big any of them get and what size pot they will need.

I've got mint (which is already in a 12" pot because I didn't want a whole bed of it), rosemary, thyme, lavender, oregano, chives. I also would be putting in sage (which died last year), basil, lemon balm, and calmomile.

Any suggestions what size pots they would be happiest in would be greatly appreciated.

How about using plastic trugs, they should be large enough & having handles will be easier to carry.

Is your plot near home?
Herbs are something you need a little of whilst cooking - rather than a crop you harvest to bring home. I'd keep them at home and give the plot space to something substantial.
Just my thoughts!

I keep my herbs outside the kitchen door we're they're handy so maybe just take those you don't use as much to your plot.

Thanks for the suggestions of keeping the herbs at home. Unfortunately I live in a top floor tenemant block and so have no outdoor space. I've regularly succeeded in killing herbs when I've attempted to grow them indoors. My plot is a 40 minute walk away so I tend to harvest then chop and freeze or dry them.

I guess the question is how much do you want to grow and then pick a pot size to suit, Mint will spread everywhere but I have mine a square Tesco flower bucket, there are the round Morrison buckets that are a useful size and you stand one at the end of each path between the beds on the allotment.

I'm going to do that with wild flowers for the bees this year.

Just go into the store & ask an assistant what they do with their flower buckets, some keep them, some return them, some sell them & some give them away. Best time is after Valentines & Mothers day so get down to your local supermarkets & you may be in luck.

P.S..............If you get some, don't forget they need drainage holes putting in them.

I have rang round every supermarket I can think of and they all return their buckets to the people that deliver the flowers. Maybe reusing and recycling has caught on in the supermarkets.

That is likely to be their official policy but if you actually go into the shop and ask then they'll probably dig you a couple out.
