Help with 10 y/o Rosemary

Hi all!
I've just joined this site after loving the magazines.
I have a question regarding 10 year old Rosemary.
I grew it from a seed and it's been in the same space all these years. It's now huge, woody and blocking the view of the garden. If I had the space, I would move it but there's nowhere else for it.
If I cut it right down I'm afraid it would die as it's very woody.
I've taken cuttings.
Can it be cut down to a smaller area? Divided?
What can I do?

Wait until your cuttings have formed good sized plants. Then if it dies after cutting back pop a new one in.
But do wait until you've good replacements.

You can cut rosemary back hard and it will re-grow. The best time to do it is in winter, when it is not actively growing, then in the spring it will produce lots of new growth. Cut it down shorter than the height you want to keep it at, then let the new shoots come up to that height, and prune lightly and regularly to keep it neat.

I agree with Danny though. To be on the safe side, wait until you're sure your cuttings have taken and are growing well, just in case. I find rosemary cuttings take very easily.
