  • Ginger and Caraway

    Sounds like a 70s singer-songwriter album...
2 questions. If you grow ginger, can you just dig up bits of root and use them and then the plant happily keeps on growing? And is it realistic to grow with sun but no other protection - maybe in a pot?
and caraway - anyone managed to grow this from seed? my efforts have failed.
And yes, I've heard of Mr Schwartz...but am cussed/insane.

Sorry, I have no idea. I have tried many times to grow ginger and failed miserably

do you think it's one of those things, like lemongrass in my experience, which sprouts but then just doesn't produce anything worthwhile in the UK, unless you have a greenhouse?

I've grown cumin from bog-standard Bart seeds this year...pretty fern-like plants but they both keeled over just as they set seedheads. Caraway is from the same family so I imagine you can grow it - they're herbs after all Just sow them in a pot with compost.

I'm trying with ginger for a second time. Broadripple is right though about lemongrass and greenhouses. If you can get them to live though its great having a fresh source!

I love carraway seeds in cake,so last year i stared a row in june,as per PKT instructions, also said do not like to be transplanted, and will not flower till year after, anyway,up they started to come,i thined them out, they seem to be very slow to both germinate and grow,am hoping for things to devolop further this year,i had to put canes and string along the row as markers so i knew where to find them, you can also be forgiven thinking you got bushy carrot tops,PKT also says about eating the root,i will just go with the flow and see what develops, might start another row of soon,

I've grown ginger in the past. Indoors, in a bit pot of compost, and fairly need the surface I seem to remember.
It was a bit from an asian supermarket where I suspect they sold tons of the stuff so it was always new and not sat there for months.

I'm not sure but my uncle used to grow ginger. I'll just post some links about it. Hope that it will help.

I got my ginger to grow to about 10ins then it gave up. Got some caraway seeds last week but I have no experience with them so i'm keen to hear from anyone who has too.
