Pennard Plants

I've just recieved a catalogue from Pennard Plants, probably because I bought some seeds from them last year.
They have an Heirloom, Heritage and Kitchen Garden Seed Collection. Seeds are all priced at £1 per packet + A single payment of £1 postage for as many packets as you like!
There's some interesting varieties including the Kelsae Onion which I have just sown which cost me £4 elsewhere for a packet.!

Thanks for this site, it looks as if they've got some really nice stuff.

I couldn't find any "collections", though. Am I going blind? Individual veg, yep, collections, no. Or was it just in the printed catalogue? Or did you just mean that they offered different types? (Answers on a postcard...!)

At £1 each, they're excellent price after Moreveg.net and Alan Romans (although limited choice) but it doesn't say how many seeds in each packet. I imagine they're at least double the qty of moreveg by virtue of being 50p extra . However I gathered that Alan Romans qty are the same as T&M's despite costing 50p each on average.

Ah, but value for money isn't just about the number of seeds per packet and the price of the packet - how many are going to actually germinate? Gardening Which? published the results of their study in September which showed that dead seeds were found in every seed packet tested, with the proportion ranging from 4 to 99 percent. The best veg seed companies (with a five star rating) were found to be Chiltern Seeds, Plants of Distinction, and Thompson and Morgan. The others were:
Four star: Simpson's Seeds, Suttons
Three star: Johnsons, Marshalls, The Organic Gardening Catalogue, Unwins
Two star: Dobies, Kings, Mr Fothergill's
One star: DT Brown, Edwin Tucker & Sons Ltd., Suffolk Herbs

I agree it's not about quantity but quality but all the above seed suppliers are normal suppliers with standard seed quantity that I consider as too generous (for my needs) so much so that there is more reason for some of the rogue suppliers to pad up the seed packets with a certain percentage of bad/dead seeds (and they say things like, oh you're supposed to sow a lot more seeds than you need). I'm hoping with the smaller qty seeds, they're mostly viable seeds otherwise what seeds are there for me to use ? Fingers crossed.

BTW the report is a bit outdated, somebody from the forum just blacklisted the 5-star rated Chiltern Seeds, there is no telling, is there? I do tend to feel safe with T&M though.
