The seeds are now just "fermenting" in a glass of water. When cleaned and dried I will start to post them out.

I made some pasta sauce with 30Kg of mixed varieties of tom last week, the French black made it look like chocolate sauce until the red varieties were added.

I know i am a mere newbie, but this post attracted my attention.

are these the small cherry size 'blacks'?

the reason I ask is, my father died earlier this year, and after the funeral, my mum and I found the seedlings in his greenhouse, now she has no idea where he got them, but he grew them every year, she gave me two and kept the rest, which despite their 'triffid' tendency ( i am a novice and forgot to take off the side shoots) cropped wonderfully this year.

and now we are stumped as to where to get some for next year? this is the first time my mum and I have grown toms, i have saved some seeds today from the last of my crop, and would appreciate some advice as to, how to dry/store/whatever for next year, or where to get some more seeds?

saving tomato seeds is easy, all i do is lay them on a sheet of kitchen towel making sure they are well spread out, then leave on the window sill in the 'sun' until really dry, i then pick them off and place them in a small plastic tub with a seal on it. wirte the name of said toms on a piece of paper and stick it in as well as i always forget which is which etc. i think in the recently Paul W (another member here) didin't even bother to pick the dried seeds off the kitchen towel he just cuts around them a sows the whole lot - seed and small scrap of towel included. as for more seeds, just keep your eyes peeled on here - the grapes really are a generous bunch and usually have loads of swaps/giveaways

I save my own seeds too, but I save by squeezing the pulp and seeds into a container and add some water if needed, then leave to ferment in a dark cupboard for 3 days. They will form a skin of mould on top, but they can washed through a fine sieve under running water until clean. From the sieve they are then spread on a coffee filter paper and when dry, placed in a plastic vial and labeled. Here are two sites that show similar ways of 'fermenting' tomato seeds.

Definitely save your own seeds, whatever variety they are. I think yours may be Black Cherry which has been around for a few years. A neighbour of ours grew some but didn't like the colour. He gave us a bag of the fruits so I saved some for this year. It's one of my husband's favourites. I only grew one plant but it's hugely prolific and I've saved more seed for next year.

well whatever they are, they taste delicous, and after eating them for weeks now, seeing a 'proper' red cherry next to them in my mums fridge came as a bit of a shock, I must say I PREFER the colour

they did take ages to ripen, and as the plant was taking over, I stipped all the vines off and stuck them on the kitchen windowsill, stuck a plantain on top and within two days they were turning.
