our VFT was a baby last year, he is called 'Steve' sad i know , and he has just flowered, we are so proud

we keep him in his original plot inside a big water bottle so the water gets recycled, on the kitchen windowsill, he does really well there, so i will look out to see if this flower goes to seed.

It depends upon which carnivorous plant. There are many different types. Some seeds lose viability quickly whilst others are fine for ages (especially if kept in a fridge). Venus Flytrap seed loses viabilty fairly quickly.
I never had much luck with the kits you are talking about Steve. They just never grew. There is no way of knowing how old the seed is and also how it has been stored.
I would buy fresh seed off a grower, I know there are some very reputable eBay sellers for carnivorous plants and seeds but also many dodgy ones.
For Venus flytrap seeds then you are best waiting for Summer (for UK sellers).
There should be quite a lot of, for example, Sarracenia plants being sold at the moment as mature plants are split before Spring so many growers will be selling off spares.

I should have some fresh VFT seed in the late summer you can have for a sae. I have some old seed you can have now but can't guarantee any will germinate.

Also remember that they take years to grow to any decent size and you may be better off buying a mature plant. Even the ones from garden centres are fine, as long as you buy them while freshly in as they tend not to give them enough water. Also, once they are a decent size they can be split to make instant new plants.

You have given me a lot to think about.I am looking at Ebay just now and i did'nt realise there were so many varieties of carnivourous plants.
Lots of reading up on them required before i buy any me thinks !!!
