  • new garden needs help

Hi I am a newbie here
I recently moved to my first house with a garden
It is south facing with a wall at the bottom, I am posting here as I have brought some seeds but will not need/use all of them so thought I'd see if anyone would like to swap with me.
I am hoping to grow some vegatables and fruit and would like something that will grow in shade (full shade). I would like easy to grow things like broad beans, runner beans, rasberry etc. Try me with what you have, i am after enough to grow in a square foot so not many!
These are the seeds that I have to swap..
    iceland poppy
    sweet william
    fox glove
    lobelia, trailing kind
    Wall flower
    brocoli
Goji berry seeds from julian graves
I am also happy to take cutting from the blue hydrangea, rosemary or the pink fushia i currently have.
or if you don't want anything I will happily send a SAE to cover postage
    Thank you in advance
    Jemma

    Hi Jemma and congratulations!
Firstly, south facing would be a sun filled spot, have you observed how much sun the site gets during the day?
There's not much that will grow in complete shade and anything that does will be leggy,(tall and spindly, weak).
For flowers or non-food plants,Ivy,Vinca, Ajuga and many forest floor ground cover plants will survive, depending on the amount of moisture in the soil.
If it is fairly damp and dark, try the many ferns available too!
Owning a garden doesn't make you a gardener any more than owning a garage makes you a car.

re: chocobed, The rest of the garden gets sun pretty much all day. I was thinking of something like an ivy or a climbing hydrangea? for up the wall end as about 1 meter of the bottom of the garden is shaded by the wall. The neighbours have a fantastic pear tree growing in theirs so I think the soil must be quite good.

re: Flobalob, I would love that, could I be cheeky and have a couple of each? I don't intend to grow many as it is only me that eats them in my house so I was just thinking of growing a couple of each, as for the fushias, they are hardy, I took cutting for my mother in law in augst when we moved in and they are now quite happy in her garden. How many would you like? do you want me to root them first or post them first class in damp surroundings as soon as they have been cut?

There currently is no new growth so you might want to wait for this rather then have old growth as I'm not sure how productive they will be.
